Transit Ridership Statistics

Something to look at while pretending to be Real Estate King of Seattle when checking out the panorama from my client's office:

Light rail (Dallas misses the cut)

Streetcars and trolleys had the highest percentage increase, at 10.3 percent.
The biggest increases:
• Baltimore, 16.8 percent
• Minneapolis, 16.4 percent
• St. Louis, 15.6 percent
• San Francisco, 12.2 percent

Commuter rail (My hometown HBG representin'!!!)

Commuter rail posted the second-highest increase, at 5.7 percent.
The biggest increases:
• Seattle, 27.9 percent
• Harrisburg, Pa., 17 percent
• Oakland, Calif., 15.8 percent
• Stockton, Calif., 13.9 percent
• Pompano Beach, Fla., 12.9 percent
• Philadelphia, 10.4 percent

Heavy rail (minimal gains aren't unexpected, these are for the most part older, more established systems with stable, steady ridership -- it should be noted however, that these are probably the biggest numbers despite the small percentages, city size and existing ridership comparitively, etc. etc.)

Subways and elevated train ridership rose by 4.4 percent.
The biggest increases:
• Staten Island, N.Y., 12.3 percent
• Boston, percent 8.8 percent
• Jersey City, N.J., 6.5 percent
• Los Angeles, 5.4 percent
• New York City, 5 percent
• Baltimore, 4.9 percent
• San Francisco, 4.5 percent

Buses (pulling up the rear, the "loser cruiser," still stigmatized)

Bus ridership rose 2 percent.
The biggest increases:
• San Antonio, 10.6 percent
• Denver, 9.4 percent
• San Diego, 6.8 percent
• Minneapolis, 6.7 percent
• Seattle, 6.2 percent
• Phoenix, 5.4 percent
